Der bestimmte Artikel – the definite article
Der bestimmte Artikel „the“ wird im Englischen sowohl für die Einzahl, als auch die Mehrzahl verwendet.
Beispiel:
das Mädchen - the girl
die Mädchen - the girls
der Junge - the boy
die Jungen - the boys
die Tasse - the cup
die Tassen - the cups
Der bestimmte Artikel „the“ wird [ðə] ausgesprochen. Beginnt das auf den Artikel folgende Wort allerdings mit einem gesprochenen(!) Vokal, so spricht man [ði].
Beispiel:
[ðə]
the dog
the cat
the father
aber:
[ði]
the american dog
the orange cat
the old father
[ði]
the apple
the orange
the evening
aber:
[ðə]
the green apple
the delicious orange
the following evening
Achtung! Ob man [ðə] oder [ði] spricht, hängt nicht von der Schreibweise, sondern nur von der Aussprache des folgenden Wortes ab!

- man spricht ein „j“ vor den Vokalen
[ði]
the hour
the honesty
- „h“ am Wortanfang ist stimmlos, das „o“ ist der erste gesprochene Buchstabe und ein Vokal
Der unbestimmte Artikel – the undefinite article
Der unbestimmte Artikel hat keinen Plural.
Er ist „a“, wenn das folgende Wort mit einem Konsonanten beginnt und „an“, wenn ein gesprochener Vokal folgt.
Beispiel:
a boy - boys
a girl - girls
an apple - apples
an uncle - uncles
Gebrauch des Artikels
wenn wir über nicht näher bestimmte Dinge sprechen, benutzen wir den unbestimmten Artikel, bei genauer Bestimmung den bestimmten.
Beispiel:
I want to buy a book about Gandhi for my father.
- irgendein Buch
You really have to read the book about Gandhi my father gave me.
- ein bestimmtes Buch
I don’t like horses.
- Pferde allgemein
But I do like the horse of my cousin.
- ein bestimmtes Pferd.
